The Guys of the Park is in painting exhibition by American artist Aaron Cossrow. It is centered around the oil paintings detailing the community of gentlemen who play janggi each afternoon in Tapgoal Park. Subjects like the Janggi players are chosen for their authentic and honest quality, a true documentation and celebration of the unique Korean culture and style. The choice of older subjects describes culture from an older Korea in a quickly developing and modernizing landscape. His work can be described as traditional oil portraiture and documentation, skillfully crafted, focusing on the details of the subjects, clothes, objects and backgrounds. These details combine to create a visual narrative that help the viewer escape to times when they shared this Korean experience.

Along side the Tapgoal paintings, featured work will contain citizens and locations from all around Seoul. A three meter canvas describing the displaced working community of Euljiro 3ga will be exhibited as well, along with twenty other original portraits of real Korean life.

Aaron’s work has been displayed at several solo exhibitions and group shows in Seoul, along with appearing on MBC’s First Time in Korea.

종로구에 위치한 탑골미술관(관장 희유)은 미국인 화가 아론 코스로우의 초상화 전시 <탑골공원의 소년들 (The Guys in the Park)>전을 개최한다. 이번 전시에서 '탑골 공원에서 장기를 두는 어르신들의 모습을 담은 대형 유화 작품 2점을 포함하여 20여점의 초상화 작품을 선보인다. 탑골공원에 모여 매일 장기를 두는 어르신들의 모습 속에서, 소년의 마음을 담아내고 싶었다는 작가는 작품이 그려진 곳에서 거리 전시를 개최하여 노인분들에게 많은 관심과 사랑을 받기도 했다.

작가 아론 코스로우는 초상화를 통해서 사실적이고, 진실한 모습의 한국의 문화를 담아 기록한다. 빠르게 변화하는 서울이라는 도시 안에서, 오랜 시간을 견뎌온 사람들의 얼굴과 그들의 생활세계를 화폭에 담았다. 그는 포장되지 않은 날 것의 한국 문화를 포착해 내고, 작품을 통해 그들의 이야기를 알린다. 미국 필라델피아에서 산업디자인을 전공하고 한국에 온 작가는 한국이 거대한 미술 학교였다고 말한다. 이후 만화와 아크릴화를 거쳐 유화 초상화와 벽화 작업을 해왔다. MBC 예능 ‘어서와 한국은 처음이지’를 통해서 세간에 그의 작업 과정이 알려지면서 화제를 모은 작가는 이번 탑골미술관에서의 초대전시를 통해서 그의 작품을 더 많은 한국인 관람객들에게 선보일 계기를 마련했다.

이번 전시에서 그는 대표작으로 <신당동의 대장장이>, <을지로 점심 배달부>를 포함해 23명의 장인의 얼굴을 담은 대형 유화인 <을지로3가 장인들>과 장인들의 인터뷰를 담은 다큐멘터리 영상에 이어 2023 신작인 <이태원의 건설공사 노동자들>등이 최초로 관람객을 만난다.
